Video Bloggers Abandon YouTube For LiveVideo

advertisement

Video bloggers are abandoning YouTube in favor of a new video sharing site, LiveVideo, which can be found at: http://www.livevideo.com/. YouTube users have been frustrated by problems with the site's messaging system. Many vloggers have had problems posting comments on videos. Comments would disappear and reappear due to a database replication problem. Users were also very restricted in how many comments they could post and in the characters and text that are allowed in a comment. Other complaints include the ability to cheat your way to the top of the Most Viewed list, the inability to effectively ban haters (i.e. very abusive users and stalkers), the prominence given to commercial media (i.e. featuring videos from CBS, NBC), and a lack of communication from YouTube.

Some recent updates by YouTube have fixed long-standing problems like the inability to change your channel graphic. They have given users more control over what appears on their profile page. YouTube staff members have begun to make videos to communicate with the community. Although YouTube has had a blog for a long time, it was completely text based which did not appeal to the pioneers of video blogging. There is been a lot of speculation in recent videos that all these long overdue changes are in response to the competition from LiveVideo.

YouTube celebrities, vloggers, and viewers have been flocking to other web sites that support the community. Many YouTube users have created their own forum sites to discuss video editing, video production, and the community. But by far the most significant secondary site for the YouTube community has been the live web cam chat site Stickam. Stickam allows vloggers to chat with each other via web cam or text based chat. It is a more immediate experience than posting videos on YouTube and waiting for comments and video responses. But surprisingly, the Stickam audience appears to be significantly smaller than the YouTube audience. Even major YouTube "celebrities" fail to attract more than a handful of regular Stickam chatters. However, several vloggers have begun radio shows on Stickam and host regular programs that invite viewers to call in via Skype
